Engine problem

Hi there,

I have a 1990 mini city, unleaded 998cc. 51,000 miles on the clock

Sometimes after switching the engine off, it will continue to chug for a few seconds, before completely stopping. It seems to do this more often after a long drive. There is no problem on start up and she drives fine.

Any ideas?

Sounds like the ignition timing needs to be adjusted slightly....

As Tony says most likely timming too advanced, Was there any work done recently, service? If its the timming it can cause detonation at high revs that could damage the engine if left unchecked.

Cant this also happen when the engine is hot and it creates the spark to occur again ? Im probably rong ! Its a learning curve for us all

Pinking as its known, from over advanced ignition timming will over a period of time eat into the tops of your pistons and destroy your engine I would get it checked sooner than later

Answer the question first,has any work been done on the engine recently? Before you go adjusting the timming you need to know if and why it has changed. Has somebody moved it or is it a component failure? If nothing has been done to the engine there are other things that can cause this.

had the ignition coil, condenser and points changed not so long ago. but it was doing the same thing then too

Oops that is what happens when you type to quick on a iPhone

you need to have the timing checked with a timing light, then remove the dizzy cap ,suck the vacumn pipe and check that the points are moving, this will check the vacumn advance is working.

I think this can also happen from carbon build up in the cylinder head, which after a long drive heats up enough to detonate the petrol without the aid of a spark. There used to be products like redX (thats still around ?) that you could dribble down the carb while the engine was running that would burn off the carbon, if there was much carbon you got a huge black cloud of smoke coming out of the exhaust.
