Head work in ireland.
hey everyone,
where in ireland can i get some head work done to a 12g295
i'm looking to get down the following:
new valve guides installed
unleaded valve seats fitted
head skimmed by 40 thou
i can send it to the uk but with shipping and return shipping it will not be worth my while.
would like to give work to someone here is there is a place that will do it.
rough guestimation on price roo if any one has gotten this done in past.
i still have to buy exhaust and inlet valves as i t's just a bare head i have. so if these could be supplies and lapped in too it would be great

i had a head skimmed in killeigh near tullamore in condron engineering, cost 50 yoyos i think, they're engine reconditioners so they'd do all the head work for ya, i'l be down that way during the week if you want me to check out prices??

will do, when i want in with the last head i did ask about boring an engine and they were saying they'd see about getting piston rings and all that jazz so i'm sure they'd sort itdanny wrote:yea that would be great Dan if your wouldn't mind.

Re: Head work in ireland.
You may not be able to take 40 th off that head the oilway on the bottom is very close to the surface and you have to measure its depth before skimming. Normaly thoes heads were fitted with flattop pistons to raise the compression.

Re: Head work in ireland.
40 thou should be fine. the head is as origional and never skimmed.
i've flat tops as it is in the engine and with unskimmed head the cr is about 9:1.
i also have a set of raised d pistons and even with them the cr is like 9.3:1 i think so would still need skimming with these
i want to bring it to 10:1
i've seen these heads with 100 thou taken off with out any problems..

Re: Head work in ireland.
There should be a min of 60 thou between the bottom of the oil gallery and the face of the head. Measure the height of the head and the dept of the oil gallery and subtract them to find how much metal is between the two.

Re: Head work in ireland.
I got a quote of McCarty's in castleisland to get a share of work done to the head (12g295 also) and engine (rebore, new valve guides, cam bearings, relap in larger valves, reface head and block and other bits), cant give you any prices because it was ages ago but all i know is that is wasnt too bad, was alot cheaper than a crowd in cork i priced.

I had no real dealings with them but plan on using them in the next few months to do them bits. They can supply you with the guides and stuff i think. Planning on attempting the porting myself.

Re: Head work in ireland.
i want an ideal compression ratio between 10:1 and 10.5:1
you need approximately 40 thou skim for use with flat top pistons (all A+)
and approximately 80 thou skim for use with the dished pistons that many pre A+ engines use.
I'm looking for head chamber volume of around 24.5cc
UN-skimmed with flat top pistons you'll have a compression ratio of approximately 9:1.
If your engine's got dished pistons you'll end up with a compression ratio of approximately 8.3:1.
even with the Raised D cooper pistons, the compression in standard form is approximately 9.3:1 or something.

Re: Head work in ireland.
I run a standard '84 A+ 998 Which has a standard CR of 10.3:1 . The only differance between this and lower compressssion modles of the same year is it has flat top pistons and the others have dished pistons ( same head used). Worked on a 998 cooper before with a worked 12g295 head that had running problems, turned out the CR was 15:1. As they say in engineering , measure twice cut once.
