rebuilding mine, choosing the best among some spares. any top tips?
should bearings and cages be kept together as a matched set or is it ok to mix & match?
also, where are the usual wear points on the cv joints?
finding it very difficult to separate the inner bearing seat from one shaft, penetrating oil applied, also heat up to about 120C. still nothing. could i re-build the pot-joint from there? (see photos)

Re: drive-shaft rebuild
It should come off with a hammer and chisel
Re: drive-shaft rebuild
I thought there was a circlip under the plastic cover on the end of the shaft (I may be wrong as its been a while since I've done a inner CV)
As for mix and matching parts, I would say you should be ok, its not normally good practise though. What your looking for it break through on the hardening, which is usually a darkening/blackening of the metal, avoid this. As with any bearing the surfaces shoukld be free from markings/scoring.

Re: drive-shaft rebuild
I've had success in using a large spanner and a lump hammer for this job in the past.
Holding the shaft in a vice, get a suitably sized spanner that fits onto the flat surface of the splines and then beat vigorously with the hammer while saying "You're no relation of mine." repeatedly.

I've heard of this technique before, the phrase must be uttered with adequate venom for it to workThe Marcos Graveyard wrote:I've had success in using a large spanner and a lump hammer for this job in the past.
