hi ,im new to this.im lookinig for ideas solutions or ideas. iv recently bought a 1991 english reg mini cooper that has been in ireland for nearly 2 years but has been off the road.it needs some work possibly the bones of 700 euro needs to be spent on it to have it road worthy which i dont mind spending,but i have contacted the vrt and they are looking for 1440 euro for me to clear it.i can not afford this at the moment but really want to get the car on the road. any suggestions welcome

if you drive it on the road and its not imported it's likely to be impounded and fines levied. plus you'll still have to pay the VRT. Revenue do provide an appeals system if you feel you have been overcharged. I used it but go nowhere with it.

I'm no expert with VRT, but that seems a crazy high price. The on-line VRT calculator does not seem to have a Cooper, but shows a 91 with a 1275 as €720 euro. If yours needs work it should be even cheaper. You can appeal and they will inspect the car to come up with a 'fair market value'. Oddly when I imported a 98 Cooper I think I paid over €600, and the VRT office registered it as a Austin Cooper, not a Rover. When i pointed it out to the girl behind the counter she just shrugged and said "There all the same"

The VRT is now done at the NCT centre and the car has to pass a road worthyness test. If the car fails is this reflected in the VRT value and do you then pay the VRT or take it away fix it and then pass the test and pay the VRT based on the value of the car after you worked on it. Does the condition of the car at time of purchase effect the VRT value anymore?

My 00 cooper sport is called an Austin in the log book its an Irish car.

My 96 mini is a jap import and its registered as a leyland rather then a rover mini

im in enniscorthy.it needs a bit of body work and the inside needs putting back together as someone pulled it apart to put a new dash in it and the gears are not engaging and disengaging properly bit of crunching trying to select gears
