Engine identification

Post by Ciotog »

Hey all,

Looked at a motor for Jules today. There's no Id plate on the engine. I'm not sure what it is.

How can I narrow it down.

Without seeing the motor ourselves as Marcos said there are things you can look at on the motor itself to help identify it.

Small bore engines i.e. 848cc - 1098cc the heater outlet on the top of the cylinder head (clutch/Flywheel end) runs straight fore and aft on the engine, on the big bore head it is inclined towards the middle of the engine. The small bore engines also have a breather mounted on one of the inspection plates on the back of the block (passengers side) whereas the big bores should have one each end of the engine, one on the timing cover and one on the transfer case. (now this could cause confusion.... if he has a big bore motor and it has plates on the back of the block, your mate has a very valuable engine in his car.....! But this is very highly unlikely)

So far I've only been looking at engine size, there may also be the question of whether it is an "A" series or an "A"+, this again can be determined by different things on the engine i.e. the distributor mount, Alternator mount and the overall look of the engine the "A"+ had webs cast into it to help make the block stronger, but these are more obvious when you have the two different types sitting side by side...

Cheers for the feedback. I'm gonna get some pics of it in the morning and throw them up and hopefully you will be able to tell me what I've got then. I have an option to do a swap on this for a scooter I have, so I need to make sure that it's the right motor for me.

Ok after finding the block and head casting numbers I have found out it is Morris A35 engine. 948cc. The search continues.

What sort and size of engine are you after...?

I've a few engines around me, and a couple out at the engineering shop getting work done prior to completing... I had a couple of rebuilt ready to go engines here prior to Christmas, but unfortunately they were stolen along with a load of other parts during the break...

Would love to put a 1300 in to her but it all depends on price??

Although there's a 1275 GT for sale on here, no pics yet though.

1293 fully rebuilt available next week, probably cost about £650 though. All brand new bearings, piston, unleaded valve seats, valve guides.... Not cheap, but at least you'd have a brand new motor capable of several thousand miles.... Used motor can seam cheap, but you don't know what you've got till you actually start running it, have seen issues on engines with as little as 30k on them as I'm sure have many others on here... Give me a shout if you want to have a chat about it

Just seen the ad about the 1275GT... either it's not a GT engine or its not an A+... as far as I was aware the 1275GT only ever had the early A series engine fitted.... I could be wrong, but don't think so
