Aerials and roof lining

Post by bc130 »

Just wondering if there is a similar aerial that can be used for the roof of a mini to that of the mpi aerial. Also, what kind of glue do people use to glue back in their roof lining and do i need to put in the bit of sound deading that runs along the centre of the roof between tha lining and the roof.

I fitted a Fiat Seicento aerial to mine, it's common across the Punto and Bravo also so they're not hard to come across, and it looks identical to the MPI one. I drilled from the top of the roof without removing anything inside, and pulled away the drivers door seal at the top to remove the front most bar on the headlining, this gave me enough room to do up the nut on the bottom of the aerial and attach the cable. Didn't have to touch any sound deadening, the headlining bar popped back in, and the door seal went back over the headlining without any more glue. The cabling went down the A pillar on the drivers side, where the windscreen washer pipe goes. If you do do it this way, it's a good time to take out the sponge Rover thought to jam in the top of the a pillar which likes to gather moisture.

Apart from my pilot hole going through the headlining leaving a pin hole, you'd never know it was a retrofit. The standard seal on the aerial is top notch, even in the hurricanes we have this week it's holding up nicely. Filling the hole for the old aerial in the front wing is another days work though

I drilled the rear of the roof in an old mini of mine and fitted a VW Golf bee sting aerial,
I took out the rear side window (easy if they are opening windows) and went in that way, ran the aerial down through the front pillar using some hollow plastic tubing (as opposed to coat hanger wire, which can puncture the headlining)
I used evostik compound adhesive to restick the headlining and put a smidge of tiger seal around under the base of the aerial and tightened it down making a watertight seal
