that button is for testing your brake circuit, if you press it and it lights up it means your brake circuit is functioning correctly (fluid is topped up correctly)

although everything has to be properly in place under the bonnet for it to work correctly, as in correct brake fluid cap on the reservoir, the one with two terminals coming out either side, these wires should be connected up properly, the switch terminals should be free of corrosion, long story short, on most minis these days it serves no purpose at all :lol:
