The gardai are getting much more strict on the nct thing. If you get one that wants to do you for it you get 5 points for the trouble.
Easier to test it

Will that be a problem when you insure it ?

yep... or if there is already a policy opened, in the event of an accicdent etc, your policy is void without a valid nctThe Marcos Graveyard wrote:Will that be a problem when you insure it ?

Re: My 81 mini
It depends on the policy. I have an axa policy that covers the cars if they have nct or not (stated in writing lol) asked for it so there wouldn't be a problem bringing cars to get tyres or to the test centre etc.

Re: My 81 mini
thats news to me, i'm with axa and under no circumstanses would they insure me without an nct. i was with them previously and have a full no claim and they wouldn't even do a temperary cover to get the car to the nctFrisco wrote:It depends on the policy. Re: My 81 mini
All cars from 1/1/80 have to have nct by law
as above 5 penalty points if convicted in court.
also risk you car been seized off you for no nct and then inspected by your local psv officer, then if any faults you will face prosecution for that too and no nct. fines will be building up then.
but forget all the law stuff: your own safety should come first. is ur life worth no nct????????????????????????????? there could be something hidded wrong with the car that you cant see.

Seriously though, and agreeing with the above replys, your better just get it nct'd.
To be honest, the nct isnt as scary as it seems. I know it's all of another €80 if it has to be put through twice, but 99% of what you need to have done for the test you would really need done for safe driving anyway even if you were to go without a test.

Re: My 81 mini
Well the initial test is €50, and if it has to go back for a re-test for failing on something it's another €28, but only if their equipment is needed. There is also a visual fail where you dont have to pay for it. (correct me on exact prices someone if im wrong).
And of course thats along with whatever it costs to replace parts. But again its safety, you dont want a wheel bearing locking up on ya etc.
It's not so much what there strict on, either a part is good or it is worn and needs replacing, no grey areas.
They' check the following;
Wheel bearings; for movement
Ball joints and radius arms; these can and should be regularly greased. If there is only a little movement you might get away with greasing them before the test..
Mounts and bushings for wear.
Exhaust. For emmissions and leaks; If it's running ok theres a good chance it'l pass emmisions.
Brakes. Effectiveness, ("stopping power"); If your mini is standard it will have drums all round. check condition of drums, cylinders, and shoes. Clean and adjust them.
Hand brake. Effectiveness and imbalance left to right; as above. can be adjusted at the hand brake also.
Suspension. ie. shocks, but a good chance they will pass as a minis suspension is so solid anyway.
Lights, horn, seatbelts, etc
Im probably missing other things but someone will add to the list
At the end of the day the best thing is get it in to a garage and check over these things, with someone thats familiar with the nct or maby someone that has put a mini through the nct. Like really you can check anything the nct guys will be checking, and know what it needs, and then see where you have to go from there.

Re: My 81 mini
NCT is there for safety. Sure its too expensive for what it is but what isnt in this country.
Id put the emphasis on the NCT more than the tax.
NCT is useless in parts. four brand new shocks pass. Four totally wrecked shocks pass. Half good and bad fail.
I had my NCT for a car. Took it in and everything had been checked. They put SERIOUS pressure on the brake pedal.
I was told after your car failed on the brakes. The brake pipe had coroded. Told me to take it handy going home. I had no foot brake. only the handbrake worked!!
Point of the story: If I didnt have my car NCT'd the brake could have gone under heavy braking when I was on the motorway or heavy traffic and things could be a lot worse. It's there for a reason.

Re: My 81 mini
NCT will only add to safety, but is *NO* substitute to good servicing and maintenance of your mini. NCT is dangerous if you rely on it entirely for the safety of your car. As some have posted, its testing can be hit and miss and some of the "fail" triggers are bizzare: fail *if the county name is not spelled correctly on the licence plate* if memory serves. - equally so a car that passes is not really much safer than one that doesn't. without wishing to hijack this thread, imho it would be far better to have random testing at a week's notice to encourage "safe" cars all year round rather than once a year at NCT time. /rant

Signature still awaiting top-coat and lacquer....

Ya, an excellent point, very true.NCT will only add to safety, but is *NO* substitute to good servicing and maintenance of your mini.
Maintenance is the key to safe cars. And once your through the nct it's very easy keep a car in roadworthy condition. Just take an hour out to check it over now and again, and it saves money on repairs. Regularly greasing balljoints and arms alone will extend the life of them.
