Minitastic spring suspension setup

Post by CLUBMANGT »

Here is my new spring setup . I was going to go for the minisport smootharide but have heard very bad reports about minisport customer service and delivery lately so I opted for a step into the unknown. I got the 78mm fast road springs from Bert (cheers mate) and Yosuke Yamamoto at Minitastic supplied the rear spacers and ride height adjusters . They are machined and polished not cast, it will be interesting to see how she rides(whenever I find the time to build it )

looks nice and shiny Tony!
I'd been toying with this idea for a while but had heard that even the soft springs make for a more harsh ride,
Will be interesting to see how you get on?

Had mine in for a couple of years now, although I'd never go back to rubber I wish that they did a front/back set with a bit more stiffness in the front rather than one size fits all. I would also go with the lowered rear shocks over standard as they would of given better ride height adjustment. But none of that detracts from the fact I haven't been scared of a speed hump for ages they definately take the thud out of mini suspension.

I'd say it's possible to get them in when you have the hi-lo turned down the whole way.

Watching this closely but i have one question that someone may be able to answer for me.

How are the springs help in, is it just the weight of the car that holds them in place.

what happens when you go over a bumpy road or when car is lifted on a jack, do they move about i.e when suspension if relaxed.

The compression travel limit is controlled by the shock as with cones.

The springs are direct replacements for the rubber donuts in the standard Mini.

The compression is controlled by the thickness of the wire in the spring and the number of coils.

The shocks only control rebound in that they dampen the force of the returning spring.

The springs are under tension at all times. Once fitted to the car they will never be loose even if jacked up, the droop of the suspension is determined by the free length of the shock.

Lowered shocks or rather dampers are shorter and as they are bolted to the shell and the swing arm they wont let the swing arm drop as much as standard.

I installed a set of springs to a customers car here and on the test drive was extremely impressed at how the car rode. Very compliant, a little softer than a car on new rubber cones (I fitted the blue road springs), and although it did roll a little more than the standard cones on the corners, the grip and control levels were as I would normally expect...

Someone asked above how the fronts were installed, they are replaced exactly the same as rubber cones as there is a threaded section in the support plate which the cone compressor screws into, obviously the top arm will have to be removed to remove the cone and insert the spring as per normal cone change.

Anyone looking any advice or help with this give me a shout, also I carry in stock the full kit should anyone else want to fit them..
