rough running mini!

Post by daniel garry »

just drove from sligo to tullamore with a very limited degree of success! the car was running very weird and juddery but was still able to get to 60, i stopped in carrick and had a quick look around and dried out all the connections, made sure the vacuum pipes were all ok etc. it ran a bit better then until longford and then it was back to its jerky running again, got as far as tullamore and it was getting bad, back firing and then died out completely, started up again and took a lil bit of revving but it got going again. then only 30 yards from my girlfriends house it died again, had to be up hill and i didnt have enough momentum to get the last 10 yards! after a bit of trying to start and reverse bump starting it started and we made it back, the car was running very badly though.
any help appreciated!

*its a 1990 1 liter with a hs4

If I was going on a long run like that I would proberbly fill the tank first, any chance this started after a full fillup, maybe bad petrol. Drain the rest and fill up again.
Cheak that your dashpot is moving freely and has oil in it.

Sounds like points or condenser or both Daniel, its common for this problem to start on a long journey due to the sustained mid range RPM. It is where I would start.

I wise old mechanic once said, Compression, Ignition and if all else fails have a look at the fueling.
regards,
Paul.

sound lads
the points and condenser are 5000 miles old, there is a chance it could be bad petrol alright, i filled in sligo on monday and thats when i noticed the odd judder but it wasnt til i was on the long drive home that i noticed it all. brimmed it in longford tho, could have been another dodgey batch!!
i'l give all a good look over tomorrow, bit dark now!!
thanks lads

500 miles would be just about time for new points to need resetting,
But as you say could be bad batch of petrol
