Stage 1 kit
Hey all I just got a stage one kit for my 1989 998cc mini. It looks pretty straight forward to put together but I was wondering will I have to do anything to it when fitting for emissions will they be much higher or will it go through test no problem.
Thanks
Thanks

Re: Stage 1 kit
i just put a stage 1 on mine about 2 months ago and it flew through nct no problems with emmisions at all so you should be good just to fit as normal, by the way the cat is still in mine but you can take out after if you want, bert fitted mine so maybe a pm to him could guide you on the fitting probs if any

Re: Stage 1 kit
you should have no problem with emissions and the Stage One kit.. be sure and follow the kit's instructions when setting the fuel mix and the timing. when are you due to do the NCT test?
Signature still awaiting top-coat and lacquer....

Re: Stage 1 kit
i'm a big fan of the stage one kit for 998's.
lcb ex-manifold, rc-40, alloy intake manifold and new carb needle, sometimes a K&N filter insert for the air cleaner: makes the one liter peppier, sweeter even than standard and IMHO gives better fuel consumption: *but* chances are you wont see better mileage as you will enjoy giving it a little more stick¬!
one added extra to the above would be to wrap the exhaust manifold in thermal wrap: i found there was a lot of unwelcome heat coming off the manifold.
it wont however turn it into a cooper-eater. for that, there's no substitute for size.
iv'e no experience of that kit on an 850. i'm sure others can comment.

I'd tend to stay away from the thermal wrap myself as i was told years ago that by putting thermal wrap around the manifold you are causing the heat to build up in other places which in turn can do damage to other parts that weren't designed to take the extra heat

Re: Stage 1 kit
The main heat problem is where the manifold heats the carb float chamber due to the proximity of both ,its usually worst were you fit an LCB with a HIF carb or Twin HS carbs and its best to fit a heatshield under the carb. In this case (if standard) its a 988 with a HS4 so heat shouldn't be a problem.

Re: Stage 1 kit
You can use a standard filter if you wish, but you will get far better results with the K&N.
The K&N filter is an active filter, it has better filtration properties and better flow properties than a paper filter.
It will deliver more power from the engine.
The more air you can get into the combustion chamber the better so why would you want to constrict it.
As engine mods go , the K&N filter is probably the simplest, most cost effective, bolt on horse power that you can get.

What symptoms would heating the carb float cause to the running of the car?woody wrote:The main heat problem is where the manifold heats the carb float chamber due to the proximity of both ,its usually worst were you fit an LCB with a HIF carb or Twin HS carbs and its best to fit a heatshield under the carb. Re: Stage 1 kit
The main problem with letting the heat get to the float chambers is that it raises the temperature of the petrol.
The higher the temperature of the petrol the lower it's working octane level.
Vizard says that the octane level of the fuel reduces by 1 for every 8° in fuel temperature. Therefore if the exhaust heat raises the petrol temperature by 32° then the octane level of your super unleaded drops from 98 to 94.
Almost a 4% loss in possible power

Re: Stage 1 kit
If you want to keep your standard filter housing you can fit a K&N filter element. Not as effective as the full filter but less induction noise.
