Make sure you have the leads in the right order/right rotation direction on the dizzy too.

The rotor in the distributor turns anti-clockwise.

Usually, but not always, the Number 1 lead goes in the 1 o'clock position, the next lead in the anticlockwise rotation is Number 3 lead which is at roughly 10 o'clock, then Number 4 in the 7 o'clock position and finally Number 2 which is roughly at the 4 o'clock position.

This is a coil, the thing with the + and - .

http://www.playmini.co.uk/images/LUCAS%20GOLD.jpg

A lead goes from the centre connection of the coil to the center connection on the distributor cap.

If you take the dizzy cap off and look underneath the rotor and you have a set of these, then you have points.

1989, Metro engine, 9.75:1 compression ratio, leaded head.

Probably a Lucas 45D distributor with blue points.

high Brian, TMG is doing a great job of helping you solve your prob at the moment the only ting ill say is be very cerfull what way you conect the coil thats the (tingy) conecting coil positive to the negitive terminal in some caces can cause the coil to be destroyed.
Been there baught that t-shirt. cost me plenty.

TMG when i met brian at the NMD i notised that the dizze was screwed down i taught this to be unusal i have never seen this on a mini thats not to say it wasnt i did see that arangement on an MG tho. That might help!!

Sounds more like a Metro electronic dizzy, did it have a small black plastic box screwed to the side of it ?

it doing my head in....evrything seems to be in order..the car starts no probs and sounds fine..its only when i get over 40km she starts to chug....the vacume valve into the carb is in and sucksion is fine...ie no cracks in it.....the only thing i changed was the rocker cover and i put a ignition coil cover on.....could it be the different depth in the rocker cover that could cause this....or could one wrong wire in the coil - + cause this......i hade to dissconect the wiring in order to fit the cover... i noticed to there is a larger valve in the carb at the side..connecting to two things either side of the engine what are they used for?@

If by valve you mean brass pipe, then that's the connection for the engine crankcase oil breathers, they're there to recycle the fumes from the engine internals, check that the hoses have no holes and that they are connected to the breathers properly, one on the clutch housing , the other on the timing chain cover. Any air leak here will affect the running of the car.

The standard distributor for that engine is a lucas 59D which has a clip on cap. Some Minis run a ducillier distributor which also has a clip on cap. Sounds like you have some other distributor on which the wiring may be more complex. What colour wires have you comming from the distributor?
