Can't get engine to run right (metro 1275)

Backfire usally means timing or if extremily lean detonation. I'd get it tuned sooner rather than later before any engine damage.

yep actually seen one of them buzzin and around traffic on the freeway, was trying to keep up to follow him and steal it but he was a goner

backfire through the carb or from the exhaust??
i had it set around 10-12 degrees with +- 1000 rpm....

I'll get dad to advance the time by 10-12deg and up the idle a little although it runs fine the way it is just needs a tiny bit of choke for a few second on startup.

It's hard to say if it is backfiring, the exhaust or something is also making a banging noise so hard to tell. How do I know is it from the carb?

exhaust box is hitting the spare wheel well... try adjustin it by loosenin up exhaust clamps and try rotate it slightly............ you'd know if its back firing through the carb trust me

Dad had a go at it yesterday but reckons maybe it just all needs to come of and be re-done. He mentioned something about someone welding a bracket to it and because of it there's not much adjustment...

if you dont mind me asking how difficult was the metro conversion? was it crazy money?

the metro engine is practically the same engine as a normal mini one, mg/rover took over mini and threw the engine into the pre 1989-90 metros. the only difference would be the crank, camshaft and some other parts im not sure about..
so realistically it shouldnt cost much/anything more than getting a normal mini engine..
i done the swap myself in about a day or so, its a great learning curve and with the help of a haynes manual and a few people from the club it isnt all that hard to do.

im sure someone can explain more on the metro engine..

The mini and metro A+ series engine and gearbox are basicly the same except for the engine mounts which are located on the ends of the gearbox. Its simply a matter of unbolting the mounts from the unit comming out and fitting them to the unit going in.If your upgrading to a larger capacity engine you may need to change the exhaust manifold unless you have already upgraded this.

sounds simple enough. is there any problems with the wiring loom? i was thinking if i was doing the swap for a metro turbo i'd bring the wiring loom and brake across too.

i'm in the middle of a turbo conversion but i've gone a different route to woody, and its a pain in the t1t5:!: as he said do a lot of research first, you will need to fit a bulkhead box aswell

Not sure if you turbo guys were aware of this, but there is a manifold kit available for the mini that allows the fitment of the turbo to the mini WITHOUT making ANY bodywork modifications.... The manifold allow the fitting of the Garrett T2 turbo kit and can give around 150bhp from the A or A+ motor.... Just need to have a well sorted gearbox to take it....

I have supplied one kit which was a very tasty looking piece of kit and apparently a great fit... (I'd have to check the current price if you wanted a set)

The guy I got it for still hasn't got his out on the road, but only as he is finishing his degree and hasn't completed the last few bits on his car 1993 Italian job if I remember correctly
