Jacking Points

Post by daveq »

I've the new inner sill and door step in place and was going to fit the jack point when I noticed the hole in the outer sill and jack receiver are not an exact fit. Is this space or gap around the jack point supposed to be there?Does it double as a drain hole, or is there a filler piece I need to get?

Also should I weld the jack point to the outer sill, i.e. drill a hole or two in the outer sill to spot weld it to the little flange on the jack point?

One more question, (I'm going to try avoid doing this as I dont like the idea, but I've seen it around the net)

Is it ok to turn a mini on its side to work on the underside of it? Interior, glass, doors, petrol tank etc have all been stripped all thats left is a rolling shell, steering wheel, pedal box and engine, it will then be resting/supported on tyres.

Thanks,

Dave.

the hole is there as a jacking point for the origional mini jack.... if your not using the origional then it would be possible to blank it.

when i'm working on the underneath of my project i put it on its side, its totaly stripped and very light so i can throw it over myself, no damage has been caused.... it is possible to do the same with them items still on it but you will need more bodies to help to make sure it is done safely and without the risk of damage.... with the weight factor i would probably preferre to us an old matress or something like it instead of tyres....

I wouldn't try rolling the car over with the engine still fitted.
As well as getting fluids in places you don't want want them to be, there is a good chance that at least one of the engine mountings will break as they are only designed to support the engine from below.
Also the weight of the engine make the roll very awkward and probably crease the front wings.

As for the jacking point, unless it's a very special car and you really want to keep it original then i would just weld a small plate over the hole in the sill.

Thanks for the info. I was thinking about fluids alright but never thought about the mounts. No its not special nor will it be, but how else would you recommend jacking it up without the original jack and points? Carry around a trolley or bottle jack and use at the subframes?

I haven't got any pics of mine on me so this is not my pic, I found it on the net but you can kind of see the space or gap I mean (to the front of the car) between the sill and jack point.

its realy a useless piece of extra weight that can only be used with the correct jack, a trolly jack would be too big if daily commuting, a bottle or sissors jack would be easier stored out of the way. as a jacking pount most just use the subframe.

I always have a scissors jack in the boot. It's much easier jack under the subframe than trying to use the original jack.
Also if the original jacking points are rusted and the car slips on the jack you will take a big chunk out if your door.
You can pick up a scissors jack in any motor factors, or call in to your nearest dismantler and ask for one from a scrapped car.
