J_W you will need to stick to the newer "classic minis". Insurance companies wont cover you at the age you are at older ones. Expect to pay a large amount of insurance regardless, as it will be your first car. Best thing to do is go online now to insurance companies, and get an idea of how much it will cost for a mini and a different car. See what the difference is.

as said above because insurance companys don't like cars over 15yrs not just mini's and not many will insure them.... maybe a nice upwards of a 98 mpi or similar would be best but they tend to be pricey....

I got a 1975 Austin 1000 insured by Hibernian when I was 18. Went through loads of insurance companies that wouldn't touch me because it was too old.....or because I wasn't old enough to get a classic policy.

With Hibernian they wanted an NCT cert but I argued the fact because the car was exempt. Ended up having to get an engineers report for it. Best thing is to ring around because most online quotation systems wont quote you for a Mini (in most cases) because of your age or the age of the car.

Not saying its impossible but it will be difficult to get insured on a 10+ year old Mini. Newer Mini's (Spi's and Mpi's) are the way to go but they are still retaining their high prices even in this recession.

Good luck with your first car....here's hoping its still a Mini
And I said, Officer, I didn't want to be drunk in public...I wanna be drunk in the bar. Now last time I checked it was still legal to be drunk in the bar. They threw me into public...arrest them!

Quinn-Direct (who a lot of younger drivers use) will not insure any car older than 20 years.
They do however class the 1275cc minis (not coopers) in the same class as the 998cc cars.
They don't seem to "load" minis at all, in fact they were charging more for a 1.0 peuguot 106 than for the 1275cc mini.

Thanks for the response guys.
I tried gettin a few quotes and your right
the prices are through the roof for an early 90's mini, but a late 90's mpi seems to be reasonable(ish) :D
i just need employment and im sorted

My first car was Stud (95 s.p.i) and it was 3,500 but that was my own policy.... It was with Axa as my first insurance, a learner permit and it was third party!

I want another Mini :(
