Car Tax

Did anyone hear the about the changes in the car tax law. I heard yesterday that even if a car is off the road it has to be taxed even if you get the form from the guards stating it has been off the road the tax office will just back tax it.
Does anyone know if this true?

Thats retarded......its "road" tax....a tax for using the roads......Is it not ?? I hope your wrong anyway. What about car collectors, garages, breakers etc. I reckon it would be strongly challanged.

They want to bring it in. I think the UK system is a better method. Declare it when you put it off the road, as oppose to after!

They cannot bring this in, it would be far too messy, what about years ago when people just broke cars and didnt declare them to be scrapped? How about cars buried in fields? how about the points mentioned above? another classic example of idiot politicians thinking out loud to the media.

Sticking with my original point:

It is a legal requirement in Ireland to have motor tax if you want to drive your vehicle in a public place.

Thats according to Citizens information. If its not being driven in a public place then I dont see grounds for taxing it.

But:

Refunds of motor tax
It is possible in certain circumstances, to claim a refund of motor tax. Your application for a refund, should be made directly to you local motor tax office, on Form RF120 (pdf). Circumstances where you may claim a refund of motor tax include;

The vehicle has been scrapped/destroyed or sent permanently out of the State,
The vehicle has been stolen and has not been recovered by the owner,
The vehicle has not been taken out or used in a public place at any time since the issue of the current disc,
The owner of the vehicle has ceased, because of illness, injury or other physical disability, to use the vehicle,
The owner of the vehicle has ceased, because of absence from the state for business or educational purposes, to use the vehicle,
The owner of the vehicle has ceased, because of service overseas with the Defence Forces, to use the vehicle.

So there might be ways around it.

It’s not as simple as that, I crashed the car a number of years ago and went looking for a refund on the tax and the one in the office said to me that I could only get a refund within the first mount or so (can't remember rightly) of issuing of the disk, after that you get nothing despite the fact the car was a right off

I agree with you hear to a certain extent.
But realistically in Ireland road tax as a whole is a complete scam, Ireland should bring in a system similar to the UK,
where road tax is a set rate for all vehicles.

Do they think that someone driving a 2.0 Golf is going to take up more road space or cause more road wear than someone drive
a 1.4 in the same car..?

If tax was brought in through petrol it would mean someone with a higher "cc" engine would be using more fuel and paying more tax.
