DIY Rust Repair ?

Hi lads , just a couple of questions I have a 92 mini with a few patches of rust I was thinkin of trying to repair them myself sure what could possibly go wrong ha ha
The colour is British racing green and found the colour I need in halfords online but was wondering what colour is the white they use for the roof ?

Anyone any basic tips for this task or am I best leavin it to the pros was thinkin of trying a smaller patch somewhere not so noticeable and if i make a complete boo boo of it I'll try save a few bob and get a pro to sort it but would much rather try sort it myself .

White on the roof I don't know but i'm sure someone will be along soon with a paint code.

As for patching the rust:
do you have a mig welder ???
if so, is it gas or gasless ???
where needs to be patched ???

If it is going to be in an obvious or structural place leave it for a pro if not you have nothing to loose by doing it yourself. There is a few projects on the go here that have a lot of photo's showing steps taken when doing bodywork and should be a bit of help but if you get stuck don't be afraid to ask but your best friend will be a 4" grinder with a grinding or flap disc, work wonders

is the car your daily driver, what budget do you have and do you have patience??

if it isnt your daily drive id fire away and attempt to fix it yourself, but bear in mind your probably/more than likely going to find alot more rust than first expected.....

have a nosey through the project section to find how its done....

Its not that hard , but a decent result can be , but if you dont have a go you wont learn anything . Compressors and spray guns are cheap now Paint can be bought in Vinny Byrnes . I am not a painter but have a look at the projects section at the one I am doing and you will see that it is possible to do it yourself and save a few bob as you say

No the car is'nt the main driver it's only a weekend fun car and its not bad rust I dont think I'm sure I'll find more like you said though.

But for the bubbles and surface rust I was just gonna sand back to bear metal wire brush it prime it and spray it with a can of spray no welding or compressors or guns etc if it looks to be that bad I'll defo have to leave it to the pros I've no garage etc . I'll get some pics of the car tomorrow and focus on the bad bits perhaps yous could advise me more on the best way to approach it then

Have a look at getting a tin of POR15, it's something I'll be using on mine soon.

well for rust .rust is a big four letter word to be honest as we all know .the rust has to be cut out.welded with a co2 welder but always go be oned the rust.be best why then is to angle grind down the weld flat to the body and lead load the piece ect. to the outher part of the body.file that down and a skim of filler then over the lead.if you just put fiberglass or filler over the piece you welded it will bubble or crack.any one wanting to ring me please do for any questions thanks. 0857791533

Is it not only if the steel is rotten that it would need to be chopped out... Im defo not going to be chopping anythin its only bubbles comin through etc I thought i could just sand it back treat the area fill if need be prime it spray it with a can and prime it etc ?

The best tool for rust removal is an angle grinder with a wire-wheel attachment. A hand held wire brush will just about scratch the surface of the rust but the angle grinder will cut all the way back to good metal.
The only problem (although I don't think it's a problem) is that it will take away a lot more rusty metal than you first expect. Even what looks like a little bubble in the paintwork will nearly always turn out to be a small hole in the metal once ALL the rust is removed.
Having said that if you just use a wire brush and treat what's left with a rust converter, then fill and paint, it should look fairly good for 6 to 12 months.
