What engine is this?

Post by martind81 »

Hi all,

Right, i took the plunge last week and bought a 93 mini that needs a little bit of welding and an engine fitted.
(i should add at this point that i am very very new to this mini craic so im going to be asking some very stupid questions!)

Anyway ive ordered the panels i need etc and have now turned my attension to the engine:

Good compression on 3 cylinders but almost nothing on one so it might be getting taken apart and rebuilt:except i dont have a clue as to what engine it is!

The engine number is on a small aluminum plate over the alternator and is: 12H159A/h175467

anybody any ideas? ive looked at some lists of engine codes but cant find this one anywhere.

also on a seperate issue, the outputs on the gearbox are two half cups (if that makes sense) and the end of the drives is just a round bar. Can i change the inner cv joint on the drive or do i need new ones or what do i do?!???

Right thats all my stupid questions for today!

Thanks

Martin

Sounds like an engine from an old Austin 1300, throw up a few photos if you get a chance.

ill get some photos up tomorrow morning.

http://www.minimania.com/ArticleV.cfm?DisplayID=1601 from this i gather:

12H 159 A H 175467

12 = 1275cc

H = Transverse

159 = ???

A = ??? (AA = Carburetter crankcase ventilation and intake air temperature control so maybe something related?)

H = High compression

175467 = Engine serial number

Anybody no anything about these engines or am better off getting something else?

Looks like something pre '70 to me except the inner CVs are post 74, can you post the dizzy number it may help.. If the engine has been lying about the low compression could be a sticking valve stuck open. Remove the rocker cover and see if the valves are comming back up fully.
You appear to be missing the inner part of the inner CV which goes on the splines on the end of the driveshaft.

is there any other place on the block that the number could be cast in? that "159A" bit has me flummoxed. as TMG said, could be early austin: more than likely a pre-unleaded engine though, and if its been lying a while, unlikley the valve seats have been hardened for un-leaded.
*EDIT*
just found this: check out the engine number!

thanks for the replies guys!

Yep bought it off a young lad called Dillion, his dads Joe and is spot on, couldn't get away from him the other night.

He said he got the engine from a guy over near carbury/clane direction, from a father/son who have alot of vintage stuff lying around.

Anyways, photos:

What it looks like is an MG1300 or Morris 1300GT engine. '69-'73.
Not the early one with the S crank but a still a good engine. Forget what I said earlier about CVs, what you have on the mini is 2 complet inner CV post '74 and the engine is fitted with pre '74 CV.
If your going for a complet rebuild the easiest thing would be to replace the gearbox with a later A+ box and drop gears.
If not you can remove the diff housing from the rear of the gearbox and rebuild the diff with later output shafts or you can change to earlier driveshafts and CVs.

If there is a tag on either of the float bowls of the SU's you should be able to ID the engine a bit more.

THere is an awful lot of rust on your CV's, you might want to budget for a new set.

Cheers guys, ill have a look tonight and see if theres any markings on the bowls.

My plan from the beginning was to have two engines: one nice and reliable and not tuned and keep that in it. then have another one that i could over time tune and upgrade abit and then swap the two.
But i want the ability to swap engines if one goes bang easily so that means i'd ideally need two identical engines.
At this point im thinking about finding a more "mainstream" engine to get her on the road and pick up something else further down the line.

I dont know enough about the vast array of mini engines out there but what do you guys recomend? Keep this and get it in the car and going? Or get something else?

I got new cv joints with the car so no problems there!
