997 Block & box? identification?
Folks,
Can someone with more knowledge than me verify the identification of the the engine below?
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/mini-cooper-997-e ... dZViewItem
How hard will it be to find a head to go with it, or will my 998 cooper head do the trick?
Thanks
-Roy

Thanks for that,
I was specifically looking for the 9F numbers, but cant find anything, and its collection only, so its a decent trip over!
I never knew there was a 997S, must look into this more. Or did you mean the H for later numbers became the 1070S ?
Thanks for your help, much appreciated,
-Roy

997 engine
There never was a 997S engine, just an 997cc long stroke engine with a pinch bolt con rod. The H is for high compression. I know this engine type well, as my Cooper WZD 345 started life with this engine. The 970S was a very different engine & is quite rare. From memory there were only about 1000 970S Cooper S models made. Be careful of what you buy.
If the engine is a 997, then your 998cc Cooper head, type 12G295 will fit & will be a great improvement. Its the best standard head for small bore engine.

997 engine & box
I took a look at the Ebay ad. This is a 997 cooper engine, high compression. The plate rivetted to the back of the block & stamped 1000 large is the key. The pistons are a flat-top overbore & indicate that the unit has been rebuilt, at least once in over 40 years. The top of the block is pocketed, indicating that a 12G 940 head, or similar has been fitted. The standard cam in this engine is quite good as a fast road cam, but frankly at this stage, it will be jaded. Gearbox number seems correct from memory, but it was a 3 syncro box & the early ones wore out quickly. I gave mine a converssion to sccr works gears.
I had great success with tuning this engine type with bigger pistons offset boring, later rods, works Formula Junior cam type 544 & a Downton 12G295 head. It was a real flyer.
If you buy it, budget for a full rebuild, but really, unless you have a 997 Cooper, do you need the trip.???
Incidentally, if anyone can locate my old Cooper WZD 345, Grey with dark blue roof, I will pay a good reward!!

Thanks wzd,
My 9FD SAH engine also has this 1000 plate on the back of the block, now i'm confused :-) was the 1000 plate only for 997 H-comp engines, or was it on the 998 cooper engines also ?
For this project, I just want it as original as possible the tuned mini will be later :-)
Thanks again for your help

997 cooper
Now you have me thinking. It was all a long time ago, 40 years to be exact. One block had the plate reading1000, as discussed, the other had 1000 in the casting. I guess I will have to look it up & revert.
