the engine i put in the car has a pre-engaged starter. the wiring in the engine bay had the solinoid for the older starter. i removed this and took the wires direct to the starter. ihave power in the ingition wire going to the starter solinoid but when iturn the key theres nothin. not even a click. the starter is working perfectly so its not that. im not to well up on wiring so im not sure what to check to sort it out :? , any ideas have igone wrong some were removing the other solinoid any help appricated

Danny,

check that when you turn the key to "start" there is power on the white/red wire at the starter. it will be finished on a spade connector, cant remember what size. that the one that triggers the starter.

also check that there is power on the brown cables, they should have power all the time as they are directly joined to the large black battery cable from the boot.

also check that when the ignition is just "on" you have a red warning light at the "alternator" bulb in the dash and that there is voltage (either 6v or 12v more or less) at the plus side of the coil.

i changed a mini from solenoid to pre-engaged starter, i found that the battery cable was too short to run the whole way extra from the solenoid to the starter, how did you lengthen yours?

*edit*
i read yours again.. i wonder are you getting power at the key-switch? brown should have power all the time, light green-yellow powered at the second position (accessories like radio etc.), white is also powered when "on* (third position) and white-red at *start* (the fourth position)

yea there was power in all the wires, ill have to borrow the bits from work again to moro an check it all again.
it was the big conector that turned the starter when i crossed it. which wire should be goin to the small conector?
would it matter what wire iused to extend the old wires? the red and white one wasnt long enough to go to the starter. there was power in it when i tryed it.

ididnt extend the battary cable it reached to the starter. its tight tho.

on my '80 estate, the one i converted to pre-engaged starter, on the starter solenoid, there's the black battery cable and 2 or 3 heavy browns going to the solenoid post, held on with a 1/2" nut
there's a heavy brown and red going to a large spade terminal
and right at the bottom of the starter solenoid there's a normal size spade terminal that takes the white and red. that triggers the starter.

as luck would have it, that's the one that's short for you!

be careful with the battery cable: its not fused and carries a huge current, like a welding machine! the engine/subframe/shell will move and flex so allow for that with the cable run.
If you do have to extend it, best way IMHO is to solder an eyelet on the new piece at either end and bolt the two together, wrap it in anealing tape and put a hose around it to stop chafing.

ihave it turnin now and its tryin to fire up but the battery died so have to charge it up
