Won't turn over?
I'm getting sick of asking questions on whats wrong with Stud but here we go again. Was driving along and I starting losing power, then she went completely. I then tryed starting it again and the ignition lights came on but after that nothing, it wouldn't even turn over. We tryed jump starting it, checked all the cables to the coil, and to the battary. Still nothing. Any ideas?
I worked it out, every three days something happens to Stud. Got him back after the gearbox re-build and three days later a relay went, fixed that, three days later he went in a ditch in Cavan, and now three days later this! What more can possibly happen?

if its an SPi, check the cut-out switch on the firewall near the wiper motor.

Battery could be gone or it may not be charging properly.

Re: Won't turn over?
I forgot to say I checked the fuel cut-off switch. And if it's the battary I don't understand why it cut out while I was driving? I was doing 30k because I looked down as the car started to jerk

Re: Won't turn over?
The engine needs the battery to run. If the battery wasn't holding charge, or being charged by the alternator...the engine would cut out. The battery could have enough charge to power the dash lights but the starter motor needs a load of power to turn the engine over when trying to start it.
It's possible that the cold weather has damaged the battery...has been known to happen.

Re: Won't turn over?
When you say you tried jump starting do you mean with jump leads if so I doubt it battery. Try giving it a push start. Get someone to push you with the ignition on and have your foot on clutch and in 2nd gear and when they get bit of speed up lift clutch.

Re: Won't turn over?
It was jump started by jump leads off a friends Corolla.
Gareth - It was push started (or atemted) in 2nd, 3rd and reverse and it was like the engine wanted to kick in but it just didn't?
MiniIreland - Fuel pump or dirty fuel, it does really matter because engine isn't turning over anyway.

It's not seized when I was pushing it the wheels did not lock up when I tryed to jump it.The Marcos Graveyard wrote:Do you mean it's seized Stan ?
I was told to look to see if it has a good earth on the battery and if that fails it's back to BERT it goes.

Kelly's will be deploying a truck in the next hour or so, so Stud will be on the way to BERT's soon enough! (again)

Re: Won't turn over?
Can you hear the solenoid click when you turn the ignition?
Get a multimeter on the battery and see what it reads, under 11.5V and thats your problem most likely.
If it is you altenator cud be nackered.
Id agree with the lads to sell it, no point in paying 3.5k insurance if you cant drive the bleeding thing. Its costing you almost e10 a day in insuance, and when your not driving its a bit of a waste.

Re: Won't turn over?
You should leave your car with Paul Kelly sometime Stan. Berts good as well (He did some good work on mini last week, saw your mini down there:D Very happy with it)
I had alot of trouble with my engine always breaking down for various reasons when I first got it, Tried about 5 mechanics who would temporarily fix things and they would always break again or something else would go.(Huge waste of money) The point is that Paul got his hands on my mini once and it never broke down again.

Re: Won't turn over?
Seen your Mini in BERT's also dude. Looks cool and really clean! I can get my hands on a carb engine and I no it won't pass the N.C.T but I don't really care to be honest, I don't need it unless I give them a reason to pull me over!neasha wrote:You should leave your car with Paul Kelly sometime Stan. Went up to Enniskerry to see this!
Never a good thing that your tow truck can't move!
Getting closer to freedom but,
we started causing a bit of traffic!
The people weren't really happy about there front garden!
So there Stud lies for another night
All in all though it was a fun night! Even though a have no car to drive you just have to love these Mini adventures!

Holy god!
If thats the luck stud brought to your tow, I dont think he should come on any runs :p .
What Exactley works on the mini?
Do you have lights? Do you have your radio? Do you have petrol?
There is no reason why he wouldnt go through the NCT on a carb thats well set up and with the cat on the back.

Re: Won't turn over?
i think the important word here is COULD I've not read the small print of my policy, and although *some* insurers require a valid NCT to commence cover, but i don't think it applies to all. For instance, in the unlikely event of my car failing its NCT, the insurance does not lapse as i wouldn't be able to drive it home or to the mechanic's!miniireland wrote:no "I'm" not, THE LAW IS ,StanO'Toole wrote:`So your telling me I'm not insured unless the car is N.C.Ted? it sure pays to be certain though where you stand with insurance.
