i didnt see it but il tell ya wat happened:
he understeered aka slid, accelerated and went a bit across the road, slid some more, and slid some more.... then the back of the car decided to slide along too and whipped its ass 180 around and then he went into the ditch backways :P
he's lucky, the right back side of the car was leaning on the ditch (wheel of ground) and on the other side of the ditch was an 8 foot drop!!
anyway when we got the car pulled out of the ditch the wheel collapsed more, the tie rod had bent completely (he has pics) all the balljoint casings were cracked/broke so the balls of them actually popped out, and the driveshaft had snapped at the coupling... so the wheel was left hanging on by the bent tie bar and the steering rack...

lucky for him i had all the spares to send him back home a day later.... couldnt put up wit him anymore

steven
doodoo stan,

maybe its time to take it easy for a while with stud. until spring like. winter doesnt seem to be too fond of you. from what i gather from this forum, stud is your first mini? takes a while to get used to driving it (it did for me, 3 month ago!), just take it easy, snow robabl isnt the best time for it! but ive been told many a time summeer is THE time to own a mini. so hang out for that!

Anyway, if i can lend a hand in anyway, let me know, im not the best of mechanics but im willing to help whatever way i can!

Stan mate, i suggest you dont do any driving over the next week or two as driving in these conditions is tricky even for the more seasoned driver,
i know this will have given you a bit of a fright too as it should, if it didn't i'd be worried!

when you do start driving him again try to reign yourself in a bit as your enthusiasm seems to be getting the better of you, you do still want to have him for the MTM this year don't you!?

best of luck dude,
Macker.

Seriously, you must be the unluckiest person, or lucky that it wasn't worse, I'm not sure..
Hopefully that will be the end of your unlucky run of things..

Stan, I would echo everyone elses comments. Try resist the urge to drive in this weather. I have. Its way to dangerous to be driving in in alot of places. I crashed my Almera in my estate. Since then, 6 cars have been written off at the same spot. A tree has been taken out, a stop sign and a concrete wall (all by different people). I was driving the s2000 for a bit and that was a bugger to drive in (although easier to handle when it kicks out). If you really need practice, get a car and take it to a very large empty car park. Try and drive in it and "test" the car. Stay in the middle of the car park and check for hidden kerbs. Within 20 minutes of adrenaline filled driving, you will understand alot more how a car handles in weather like this. Just keep it slow. High gears and drop gears for corners. Try and let the engine slow you down more so than using the breaks. By the time you realise there is a turn coming up, you should already be slowing down by then. Try keep your foot off the break, or at least just keep is slightly pressed and slowly stop. Thats the best advice I can give.
I cant remember, but is Stud your daily driver?

Thanks for the advice everyone but why do people keep telling me to go to a car park, for one the only thing that will happen is the Gards will come and tell me to move alone and two I have been driving for months (maybe not in the ice) but I haven't gone over 20k on any road that isn't a dualer that I know is grited then I'l take Stud up to 50k. What happened there was nothing I could do about it and I'm sure Simon could tell that from his view that he had in his rear view mirror! I also have to drive as I need to work as I did just pay 3,200 (part of which was a loan) for insurance so thank you again for the consideration but I don't really have a choise.

Stan, i have been been driving for a good few years now and have spent a bit of that driving in New Zealand during the winter months (this is nothing in comparison) but would still reluctantly take my car out in the current climate. Don't get me wrong i know how confident you feel about your driving skills, i was the same when i was your age, but as the lads said nothing is as good as a bit of 'fun' in an empty car park with your left hand hovering over the handbrake. The Garda can't really say anything to you once a person with you has a full licence and is 'giving you a driving lesson'. I would still consider myself inexperienced for the current road conditions, which is why i haven't taken my car out in the last 3 or 4 days. As i said don't get me wrong but a couple of months driving in normal conditions does not prepare you for what the road conditions are like now.
Hope things pick up for you and Stud
Steve
