Engine Issue
Hi folks,
Got the car back today from Paul (minifix) to get all the bits and bobs sorted. Was grand when I was leaving. However, on the way back (around 15 minutes later) the engine stuttered a few times when I was trying to accellerate (Id say this happened twice). When I got home, was inside for about 30 mins and then drove the car again. Was fine for about 5 minutes then I noticed the revs dropping down, and when I pushed the accelerator, the engine got very "spluttery". Then it died.
Got it going again by leaving the choke out to keep the revs up. Changed gear and same thing started happening. Messed around with the choke and it kept going. Had to pull out/push in the choke when I was changing gears or wanted to stop. Had a look at all the tubing and all seems ok. Distributor cables and sparks all seem ok. Any one have any suggestions?
Thanks

Re: Engine Issue
CV joint, 4 shocks, radius arm, breaks and wheel bearings. Nothing engine related. Paul found a hole in one of the radiator pipes (hence my earlier over heating issue).
I filled it up with fuel on the way back. No backfires that Im aware of.

Re: Engine Issue
Before I got the fuel, it hesitated twice for a split second. Filled up about 5 minutes from my house afterwards. Possible dirty fuel??

Re: Engine Issue
There is a good chance you picked up some water,
or
Now that the water leak has been fixed the temp of the engine may have acutely gone up(even tho the gauge reads less) meaning the Mixture may need readjusting

Re: Engine Issue
Leak wasn't fixed (didn't have the part). Temp seems fine. Was driving for a good 30 mins and no steam/over heating at all.

Re: Engine Issue
Sounds possably like fuel starvation. The only thing I can see is that Paul would have had to move the fuel tank to fit shock. Is the car injected, possable lose connection on the fuel pump located in the tank? Have you an inline fuel filter, maybe cloged after disturbing tank.

Re: Engine Issue
hows it going. only a thought if the car was lying around for a while at the garage it might have got some dampness in the distripator it would be worth taking it out and cleaning it or check your pints are ok if your car has points.

Re: Engine Issue
Was only in for 2 days and was taken for a short spin. Just seems really odd that it only manifested itself after I had taken home, and on the second journey out. Was driving 99% perfect up until that point.

Re: Engine Issue
'89 Mayfair not injected. If ther is an inline fuel filter it will be an aftermarket one, clear or white plastic cylinder on the fuel hose near the carb or under the car below the tank.

Re: Engine Issue
Swalker, Ill check that! Rhys, the tube had come off the dizzy, but I reconnected and still the same. It's connected to the carb ok. Could any other hoses/pipes be doing it?

Re: Engine Issue
Hmm, maybe I just need to leave it for longer. I let it run for about 10/15 minutes after, but it made no difference. Should it be clamped onto the cap? Its currently just "on" the pipe. Im going to check the earths too. How many earthing points are there on the engine?

Re: Engine Issue
when it happened to me it had cracked off the dizzy theres a litlle pipe that it pushes onto so i added a bit of bigger pipe to bridge the gap and drove it back to college from home (bout 40 mins of driving) and it had cleared up!! thats what happened to me!!!

Re: Engine Issue
It still fits onto the dizzy pipe fine, but it does seem loose. Might get a small clamp or something on it, just in case. Ill make sure theres no holes in it too.

Re: Engine Issue
Might be the dashpot. Took off the pin today and heard a gurgle, looked in and couldnt really see any oil (had none on me to top up and check). I checked the earth on the earth and it seemed fine. Will check the petrol tank too just in case and let ye all know.
Thanks for all the help so far

Re: Engine Issue
Looks like it might be resolved. Re-filled the dashpot and checked all the earths. Started up, but was struggling. Very strong smell of petrol at first (possibly due to needing the choke out constantly last time). Left it for about 10/15 minutes running, pushed the choke in and hey presto. Seems ok now. Took it down the road, around and reveresed up! No problems (well, I stalled reversing ) I noticed there was a tube missing from one of the pipes. Re-attached it, but the base is split, so didnt go on very well. Here are the photos: (sorry for the bad quality, took them in the rain last night from the phone).
Comes from here (just under the carb):

Anyone any ideas what it is?
