engine check?

Post by Eanna »

can anybody please help me?

im about to start on a project mini that doesn't need much bodywork but it does "need"(i want more power) a new engine.

i have sourced a 1275 engine but dont no an awful lot more about it. i was told that it was running perfect but that is only going on the mans word. can i be certain of this and do a few simple test/checks?

any info will be welcome,
Eanna

Let the buyer beware.

unless it's in a car and you drive it, there is no way of knowing. Could be a flyer or a ball of dodo.

Do you trust the seller ?

Wern't you going to rebuild it anyway ?

i had just planned on dropping in the engine and hoping for very little work....

i know a rebuild is the only certain way to do it but i don't think id have to money or the expertise. would it take a lot?

It would all depend on how good/bad it was to start with.

Buying a short engine from any of the tuners in the UK, you have to remember that they usually want an exchange engine from you, and it has to be the same cc, cant exchange a 998 for a 1275, so there is the cost of thet plus the cost of getting it over to the UK, then you have to build it yourself when you get it home and add on your head and gearbox, you wont be long totting up to €800-€1000.

Your best bet is to buy an engine from a reputable source here in Ireland, you could try Ger O'Leary in Cork, Ray Cunningham in Galway, Mervyn Johnston in Fermannagh or Lloyd Hutchinson in Wicklow.

Eanna, if it turns out to be knackered, I'm interested in it, I'm trying to source a few 1275 blocks at the moment. (hint to other readers...)

Cheers.
