Classic car insurance

Does anyone out there know of any good insurance brokers will cover a 17 year old with a full license on a 20-25 year old car for handy money. I checked on a few sites and it is like €4500 to insure a 88 1 litre Mini which i think is a rip off!! It is for a friend i am inquiring for as he is thinking of buying a 88 Starlet but wnt get license until Feb 2010 and car will be 22 yeasrd old. Also, I was wondering if he would have a better chance ringing up insurance companies like quinn direct as they dont quote cars older than 89 on their site. Thanks for reading.

Classic car insurance is usually only available if you are over 25 and have an every day car as well

So if i was 17 first car i my own name on a 88 MINI is out of the question. Would Quinn Direct cover a car 22-23 years old if i rang them?

Lads I'm 17 and trust me I'v done all the homework on insurance! The only way you will afford insurance (if your under 20) is if you are a named policy! My Mini is a 1275 and I was getting quotes of 7k! What you do is go on your mothers/fathers policy. If they say its to risky get them to take out a seperate policy on the car and put you as a named driver (in my case the mother drives a Passat and I own a Mini. My mum has her policy for her Passat and then a second one on the Mini which I am a named driver. This way if any thing happens her Passat policy is not affected.) It's the cheaped and easyest way. A full drivers licence doesn't make a difference anymore (well maybe a few hundred quid but I guess eery little helps) Let me know if you work out a cheaper way to get insured!

i'm 23 found it hard to insure the 88 as an everyday car, eventually got it for 1000 fully comp, thats with 3 years no claims, try axa!

Only thing is if your insurance company looks into things say for a claim or anything and finds out you should be the main driver not just a named driver then your screwed.......

Also i was inquiring i was thinking of buying a 89 MINI 1 litre and ill not be on the road with my full license but insurance will be very deer, if i did an engine swap while using the policy Stan told me earlier and i was caught, would anything happen to my dads insurance on his car or will it just affect me as named driver.

Basicly what Gareth is trying to say if you were to down the way I told you to (as a named drriver) but the insurance company coped on that you were the one driving the car 24/7 you would get in trouble but there is not really any chance you would get caught (unless you put the subject on a puplic forum or something) . The way insurance companies look at the whole named driver thing is that - your on a car that is in the name of the policy holder therefore as there car they would be using the car most of the time and when ever the car is there to run up to the shops or something like that. So as the owner would be driving the car most of the time it is not used much by the named driver so there is less risk and therefore cheaper you get me?

As for the engine, what engine have you changed? Since it's a 89 it's still eligable for the N.C.T so if it was a 1ltr but there was a 1.3ltr in the engine bay and they figured it out - you f**ked! And vice versa if your in a crash.

what if the car is older than 20 years is it still eligable for test?

It must be over 25years old to be N.C.T exempt and at that it would be classed as a classic therefore not a hope of getting insured on a provisional!

but i was going to wait until i get my full license before i get on the road because with all these new laws for provisional

Even with a full licence would still have trouble with getting insured with such an old car as you do not qualify for classic insurence till your either 21 or 25. Not sure but it is one of those ages! You need insurance on a car to do you driving test to get your full licence anyway.

What sort of Mini do you own at the moment?

When you get your full licence and you try get insured on a 20 year old Mini would be just as much and if you were to go 25 years (classic) you would not get insured on it till your at least 21years of age.

Yes indeed but I think it would be cheaper if your went on the policy the way I explained on a newer Mini (90's)
