Steering Column Adjuster

Post by MiniMe »

I'm in the process of making my mini more comfortable. The seat brackets are in and it's amazing what a difference that extra inch makes!
Next up is the steering column adjuster, it arrived in the post today. I have hit a snag though.

The first step in the installation instructions is "Slacken four nuts on floor holding the steering mechanism."

I pulled back the carpet but can't find the 4 nuts on the floor! All i see is one nut & bolt at the bottom of the steering column. Am i missing something?

Mini is a 95 Sprite Spi. Any help greatfully appreciated!

Hay Enda
4 bolts wired??
I'd say that drop bracket dose a number of cars. Its easy to install all you need to do is take off the one bolt that holds on the stearing. You'll need a vice grip or simlar because one side has no grip. Then just put on the bracket and thats it. There shouldn't be anything else to it
If it isn’t broke then it’s not a Mini

Cheers John, I'll give it a shot and see what happens.
I ended up replacing those vacuum pipes we worked on a while back. The connectors were worn out and gave up during the week. She's running smoothly again!

The four nuts are the ones holding the steering rack U bolts in place on the toe board(floor) of the car.As you are dropping the steering column, the rack which is bolted to the column at the base must move as well to keep the splines correctly aligned. It is just a matter of loosening the nuts, installing the drop bracket to the column and tightening everything up again.

the problem I have is that I con't see the nuts - am I looking in the right place? i.e. where the steering column meets the floor

Tried following your advice John but I felt like i was forcing the column down and putting strain on it. I'll take another look tomorrow when the light is better. Meanwhile I'll be bringing the Hayses manual to bed!

The four bolts aren't at the steering column. If I remember right they are on the sloping section of floor. Take out the carpet and they should be visible. Forcing the column down will cause damage to your column / rack

Where the steering column passes through the floor, just to the left of this are two nuts on the floor and in the passenger side where the floor has the indentation for a LHD steering column there are two nuts on the floor also. These are normally Nyloc nuts. You will have to lift the carpet to get at these.

And just as a side point... your 95 sprite used to be my dads. I'm guessing you bought it from Ger.........

Thanks for the info folks, I'll have a root around this evening.

Gareth: I did indeed buy the car off Ger. It has been going well. Haven't needed to do much with it apart from replacing the water pump and vacuum pipes from the manifold to the ECU and airbox. Anything else has been shiny cosmetic stuff!
