now that im driving the clubman fulltime the gearbox is getting kind of annoying, i seem to be the only person in my family that can only get the thing in to gear
bacicly the gear lever is very stiff as you move it from side to side, for example when changeing from 2nd to 3rd. iv had it up on a lift a few times and have disconected the linkage from the back of the box. the linkage is perfect and you can move it with your fingers however the selecter from the back of the box is very stiff and the only thing that wil move that is a vice gripes.
at the moment weve narrowed it down to the gearbox.
what seems to be the problem in the gearbox?
anybody experinced similer?
any quick solution, or is it out with the old box in with the new?
the only thing i can think of for that is that something has fallen from the engine and got itself lodged under the gear selector and is causing the stiffness, god forbid, but maybe a thrust washer!?
hi jason, i recently had a problem going from third to second followed by the box locking up! either due to a collapsed bearing or a synchro sleeve locking onto the shaft. not 100% sure which yet as gearbox has not been removed yet. hope yours is not the same problem!
Sounds like selector problem within the box itself.
I take it you put the roll pin right the way through the shaft as I you dont it will catch on the casing causing stiffness as well.
hi i had similar prob my gears were like that you would have to be a bit ignorent with them it turn out to be the stick shift. the small alloy part inside was broken at the back and when you went to get gears it was catchen. i had to take it out and weld it. you should just take the small plate of the bottom and check before you go and take your engine out . hopefully its that and not the other. if it is it i can weld it for you free of charge.no prblem.

this is what we were hopeing at first, because it is the simplest problem and it is not contained inside the box. however when we had it on the lift recently we disconected the linkage, when the linkage is disconected it is perfect and is lovely and loose and easyly moved. iv had a look at the linkage and replaced the gear lever with the ball on the bottem which seems to elimated a problem with the linkage but not all is lost ateast i know a man that can tig weld

i think it could be something like this unfortunitly because when ur changeing down from 3rd it can somethimes grind very badly and can be fairly whine
i must have another look at it at some stage...shur every day is a school day
Is this happening since the engine was fitted to car, I have the same problem. Remove the right hand end cover on the diff and remove the spring ,cylinder and ballbearing and see if it frees up.If it does theres a tempory fix you can do.
thats rite it did only start happening when i put the engine into the car
il have a look at this alrite, shur the box is going to have to be opened at some stage anyway. i was talking to TMG last nite and he was saying that if it dosent get any worse just keep driving it. he explained to me to look at it as a kind of a sucureity feature because im the only one that has the "nack" to drive it
I've been driving for about a year like this and what Ithink happened to mine is that while the engine was out and flooting around several garages for a few years the selector was proberbly clobbered and bent the reverse selector bar.The cylinder in the side of the diff housing centers the selector shaft so grinding a smell lip on the end of it allows the shaft to move in a little more. You can remove the cylender with the engine in the car so its agood place to start.
