Broken gearbox

hi all,
just got off the phone to my mini mechanic and after i described the horrible symptoms, he reckons the reason my clubman estate decided to give up the ghost on the track at mondello on sunday is due to a knackered gearbox (worst suspicions confirmed),and will cost in the region of a grand to put right(complete overhaul including all parts, clutch etc.) would this be worthwhile or should i start looking for a complete replacement engine/gearbox, bearing in mind the replacement unit could also need attention in the future?

Hi Kev,

What sort of gearbox is it? A gearbox rebuild including fitting etc should come in under €500 if you talk to the right people.

she has a 998 A plus engine which originally powered an austin metro.
