once the car is registered before 1987 in Ireland you're fine to have black and silver plates!

Ashgrove interparts in bray could get you a set made up for around €20,
but if you are looking for the old type with the large raised numbers/letters be ready for a shock!
they can cost you around about €60 for a set or more!

The law as regards black and silver plates is simple. The new euro plate i.e. the only one the NCT will pass came into use on the 1st of Jan 1991.If you want black and silver plates on a car that was registered before this date you are breaking no law as there was no standard for plates before this date,I know this because I read it in the garda station while paying a speeding fine many moons ago. :D I would love black and silver plates on my RSP but because it is a 91,no joy.

Check out http://www.fancyplates.com/ if you want good value black/silver plates for your Mini.
Usually made and delivered within 2 working days from Omagh.

If you're looking for the 70's style raised digit type (black digits on white or red plates) then try Paul Mc Naughton at 087- 223 0254.
These type plates are expensive at about €90 for a set but worth it. I have a set on my Triumph Dolomite.

I used to make those plates years ago for the local vintage club for 25 quid a pair.

Gave away all the jigs and digits to a friend. At 90 Euros a pair, it would be worth getting them back.

Pretty sure I can get the pressed plates made down here for 30 euro as I had them ordered a year or two ago for the Austin 1000......I could post them to you and everything if needs be. WIll double check that but €90 is ridiculous.
And I said, Officer, I didn't want to be drunk in public...I wanna be drunk in the bar. Now last time I checked it was still legal to be drunk in the bar. They threw me into public...arrest them!

3D silver raised letters and numbers on a black background work out at €130 each if I remember right from Durrow.

Some local motorfactors will press silver and black plates but the font is not correct for vintage cars, they produce a thin digit whereas the ones Paul Macnaughton produce are the original type and the raised ones thought expensive look great on 70/80's cars.Love them on the Dolly Tony.

These type plates (large old style font in silver on black metal) are about €60 for a pair. Renauto in Dorsett Street in Dublin did them for me.

These type plates ( 1970's style raised plastic digits on red[rear] or white[front] metal are about €90 a pair from Paul Mc Naughton 087-223 0254
They are made in the UK by one of the companies that supplies road signs!

hi lads.
i can remember making the red and white number plates in the early 80s, when we ran out of the little circlip we used to melt the back with a soldering iron!!!!!
if i close my eyes can still get the smell....as the plastic digits melted,,, long time before health and safety were active!
paying 90 euro for a set of no plates sounds way over the odds, there is a company baased in dublin called d and s roe who supply all the garages with their no plate spares, might be worth a phone call to find out if they can supply.
let me know how ye get on..

Lee Radiators in the Marina Commercial Park (021) 4311588 in Cork city can get the silver-on-black pressed aluminium plates made up to order. Its been a couple of years since I got them done and I can't remember how much I paid, but I think it was €30-odd.

Monplate in Carrigtwohill still do the original 3.5" plates. 3.5 inches is the correct height for Irish old pressed aluminium plates. UK plates such as those sold at most autojumbles, are slightly shorter at either 3 inches or 3.25 inches tall. You'll always know the real thing when you see it.

where as the incorrect ones like like this:

I have a correct set put aside for when PIM91 eventually gets the badly needed body resto.
