insurance

Post by joe f murray »

hi
im having a bit of trouble getting the right insurance for my mini it is a 1979 mini. i want to insure the car like you would insure a normal car for everyday use but so far no luck. i can get the car insured but it limits me to 5000 miles a year and i have to have another car insured.
does anyone know if it is possible to insure an old mini without having to do this.
joe :)

Hibernian insured my 1975 Austin 1000 for everyday use. Had to go into the office and argue that it didnt need to do the NCT and they made me get an engineers report done on it.
And I said, Officer, I didn't want to be drunk in public...I wanna be drunk in the bar. Now last time I checked it was still legal to be drunk in the bar. They threw me into public...arrest them!

You can usually buy extra miles for the policy, but the mainstream companies don't look kindly on 30 year old cars for every day use.

My 1980 Mini was insured as an everyday car up until about 4 or 5 years ago, but the insurance company weren't happy to keep this up, and had made a deal of it when the insurance was due for renewal for a few years before, so it was switched to a Classic policy as it was getting very little use and my Dad has it and his everyday car insured. It suited to do this, but shop around because there are companies that will insure you

as suggested above give FBD a shout, they should be able to do something for you.
best bet is to drop into one of their offices rather than ring their call centre.

Don't think they have offices anymore, their office on the Naas rd closed before christmas.

thanks lads for the advise i think i have it sorted. i got a good cheap quote today but it only covers third party only. but at least i only have to be named on a policy rather than have another policy. the quote i got was 120euro. :)

Im 21 , full license, 1 year NCB, quoted 875 on a 1380 91 cooper with axa. living in dublin close to city centre so it should be even cheaper for lads down the country.

last year it was 1,800 with quinn on a provisional.
