my mini 91 dual carbs!

Post by TWINcarbs »

Just bought my new mini there 2 days ago for under 2000 euros.
Im very happy with it put it needs a small bit of work!
Both floor panels, strips on the A pillar, both chrome rings around rhe front lights!
Maybe a new grille because it is slightly rusted.
It's a 1.3 with racing sparkplugs, racing camshaft, dual carbereutors with k&n filters(not fitted in pics!), full authentic zeemax bodykit, deep dish 13" minilites, janspeed exhaust, angeleye headlights and clear indicators and side repeaters.
Its only my first cars as i am only 15.Great start off as i am an avid mini lover!
It will be a while before im completely finished the project so watch this space!!!

Congratulations on the purchase and welcome to the forum.
Looks like you got quite a lot of car for your money there. The best of luck with it, if you need any help just let us know, we have a few members in the Leitrim/Roscommon/Longford/Cavan area who might have any parts or info that you need.

As it happens i need some help!
The twin su carbs were originaly on a 1 litre.
They don't work right on my 1.3 lump!
The fella i bought the car off told me that they just need a set of needles and then tune them up and the engine will run perfectly!!
By any chance would anyone have a spare pair of needles or know where to get some?

The only way to find out what exact needles you need is to have the car set up on a rolling road. As it all depends on what cam/head/inlet manifold/exhaust modification you have.

Other than that all that I can tell you is that David reckons that for a standard 1275 non S engine you should start with a set of red springs and E8 needles and go from there.

Do you know what the twin carbs you have are from ? there should be a little tag on the top of one of the dashpots that has an ID number, usually AU****, if you post that up I can see if I can find out what it is off.

If the car isn't running right your best bet might be to put it back to a single HIF44 in standard guise for the moment.

it turns out there is a lot more wrong with it than I initialy thought.the whole electrics are a mess!the lights only work when they want to,the radio wires are in a complete mess, the clutch wont engage, the dual carbs that wer on it were set up for a 1 litre engine(i have since got a replacement 1"3/4,generously donated by joe whyte, but i am still in need of the spacer between the carb and the inlet manifold!)there is a few bolts missin on the belhousing so im thinking that it was a careless rebuild! I think the roof was resprayed white and was an amatuer job as its just flakin off around the guttering, and lots of little bits like that. But i havent lost hope because i have more than a year to get it right. So wish me luck!!

I think I might have the carb spacer you need, I'll look in the cave tonight and see.

I wouldnt worry about the bolts missing from the flywheel cover, it's common to leave them out as they are not easily accessed, they do very little anyway.

Did you ever get the number of the twin carbs ?

No I dont think Im going to bother with them! An 1"3/4 carb wit k&n filter, lcb manifold and straight through exhaust might do the trick!Em i hope to be sending it over to ray in galway as soon as my auld fella get hold of a trailer. Then get it into storage and start the real work.So watch this space till I get into action.

thanks tomini, but its doubtful if ill be out for the Stephens day run.
Currently im in a depresion.Got a call there thursday before last from ray.He got it running and sorted most of the electrics. He said that it would be ready by saturday morning and he was just going to start fixing the clutch.i was delighted, counting the seconds till i got her back.Little did i know id be getting another phonecall from ray so soon.He changed the clutch slave and put a new bushing on the engaging arm, yet the clutch still wouldn't engage. so
he took the housing off and discovered the flywheel was half on and the crankshaft was sheared.SO basically he told me either buy new crankshaft etc.etc. for more than 1200euro
or just buy a new engine and drop it in!
so iv been desparetly searching for a new engine!
iv tried almost every breakers yard in this country but i cant find anything.
if anybody would know of anybody or anywhere id be forever greatful.....
anyways must crack on.....

Hello Twin carb's sorry to here the bad new's on the crank,i changed mine with Ray for a MED but he took out of my "S" engine a EN40 crank it sit's in the loft of the garage doing nothing, but it is a shame because it needed +30 bearing's on it and they are really hard to get,you probably would only get a year out of the crank and then you would have to change again, bummer really if it was any good we would have sorted something out, what cc engine are you looking for 1000cc or 1275cc?let us know best regard's jon

i was looking for a 1275...
but i am hoping ill get hold of the 1380.
ray says the cost could start mounting because the fella i bought of made a balls of everything. he says ya could put in a cracnk and flywheel but you never know what could be wrong with the rest of the engine.the fella i bought it off also said it has a racing cam in it and for all i know if he did as good a job fiting the cam as he did rebuilding the engine im screwed.I think the best thing i could possibly do is but a new engine in and got on with doing the rest of the work needed, floorpans, paint, interior etc etc..
thanks for the help though.

Ok guys,
finaly got my finger out and bought an 88 mg metro.
100,000 thousand miles which is a lot less than i was expecting.
engine looked fine and it drove perfect and started from cold with a small bit of choke,no oil or any other stains around the engine bay although it had been sitting around for a couple of weeks so the brakes needed to be bleeded
so the plan is to take out the engine and the brakes and throw them onto my yolk!
a few pics......
