'89 Racing Green Mini

Post by Billy »

I'm sure someone will recognise this Mini pretty quickly in its later form. Here's how it looked when I owned it 15 years ago when it was an original '89 Racing Green.

I bought 89G3855 in Salthill when I was living and working in Galway back in '92. In August '93 I packed up all my worldly possessions into the Mini to move to Ayr in Scotland. A few weeks later I felt the urge to buy a mint Mk2 Golf GTI and the Mini had to go. I arranged with a friend of mine, Frank Morley in Ballincollig Co. Cork, that he would sell it for me. That meant I had to drive from Ayr to Cork on a Friday afternoon and it didn't miss a beat. The photos were taken 15 years ago on the day after I drove back from Scotland outside Frank's house.

89G3855 was sold to someone in south Co. Dublin. I don't remember the name but I'm sure someone can fill in the gaps.

As you can see from the photos, it was a basic model with plastic wheel covers.

Who'll be the first to recognise it?

I think its in Clondalkin. I remember seeing it in the Cherrywood area of the nangor road. It use to be at the top end but I heard it move down the estate.
Hope this is of help.

I was fairly sure Stobart was my old Mini but I couldn't prove it until I found those old photos yesterday

I went to look at it recently and i have to say its seen better days and then the guys in the garage its in in palmerstown proceded to tell me it was a "sport mini" and they had done alot of work to it (cheek)

then said they would let me buy it for more than it was advertised on carzone for

I laughed said no more and walked away

STOBART 2 is well on the way though

I wish I knew who I sold it to. Frank Morley had put an ad in the Irish Times and whoever rang him from Dublin got my phone number in Scotland and then rang me there. What that person didn't realise was that I was only in from the pub next door and was langers. God only knows what I said to the woman (the buyer's mother) but whatever it was, it worked.

It was around September '93 that I sold it, if that helps. The person who bought it was definitely from south Dublin.

I used to see an 89 G one around the Southside back then, must have been the same one, something tells me it was around Foxrock/Deansgrange

Foxrock does sound familiar. Apparently the buyers had had just missed out on a similar one and when they saw mine in the Times, they made contact pronto.

the logbook when i bought the car was the original old type one but if my memory serves me right i was the last slot available on it and i never received one from Co Clare.

when i rang them they told me it was in my name though they had not issued a logbook too me and i had to apply for a replacement(which i didnt have to pay for even though they asked).
it was issued to me in clondalkin there and then in front of me

So because of this I was not aware of any of its previous owners

Niall,

I did a bit of rooting through some old paperwork today and the original owner of 89G3855 was David Redmond, 51 Beach Court, Grattan Road, Galway. I have the receipt he gave me when I bought it off him for £4900 on 25th March 1992. Back then it was my everyday car and was used every second weekend for zipping from Galway down to Cork to see my then girlfriend (now wife). One of my favourite memories of 89G was driving from Galway to Dublin and back one night to see Rory Gallagher play a free gig in College Green.

I still can't find any record of who I sold it to which is bugging me.

Anyway, that's more of the car's history sorted for you.

Billy
