Tyre choice

Post by Goose »

Hi all, :D

Just a quick question.

I had a set of 155/70/12s on 12x5 rims and they were rubbing (Barely) on the very outside of the tyre over speed bumps and the like while on the Mini Sidewalk.

The original set up on Steelys had 145/70/12s and had no problems.

Will 12x5 wheels take a 145/70/12 tyre.....Will I have the same problem because of the wheel width....or will it be ok with the narrower tyre ? What size are the standard steel 12" wheels (12x?) ?

Or is it a case of trial and error ?

And I said, Officer, I didn't want to be drunk in public...I wanna be drunk in the bar. Now last time I checked it was still legal to be drunk in the bar. They threw me into public...arrest them!

Just remembered . . . I forgot to say that I have Hi-Los. Not sure if it makes a difference and the rear is not jacked up higher than looks normal but it might be the difference.

A lot of people are running the Yokohama A539 165/60/12 without any issues.

If you want to be totally radical, go for the 165/45/15 8)

 15s

So I should be okay with 145/70/12s on 12x5s then ?

Thanks City

To find the overall height of the tyre , you multiply the wheel size by 25.4 and add to that the total of the tyre width multiplied by the aspect ratio divided by 100. this will give you the tyre height in mm.

155/70/12 = ((12*25.4) + (155*((70*2)/100)))

= (304.8 + (155*1.4))

= 304.8 + 217

= 521.8mm

145/70/12 works out at 507.8mm

165/60/12 works out at 502.8mm

Just for comparison,

165/70/10 works out at 485.0mm

175/50/13 works out at 505.2mm

165/45/15 works out at 529.5MM
