Welcome to the Irish Mini Owners Club forum. Celebrating 30 years of the Irish Mini Owners Club, 60 years of the Mini, 50 years of the Clubman and 20 years of our flagship event MTM
i recently put in a new 1380 and it runs fine until i turn off the key then it cotinues to run very badly then fires up again before turning off. this does not look or sound to cool. i think it might be the carb that is the problem as that came off my brothers cooper and he somtimes had the same problem. does anyone have a solution
What Minis have you?: Mk1 Austin Mini,Mk3 Layland Mini,72Van,81 Clubman Estate, 87 Race carand a 2000 Rover Cooper.
Modifications: Mk1: 998 with flat top slipper pistons, 286 cam, 12G940 head 11:1 compression twin inch and a half SU's 5 speed gearbox. Mk3 998 automatic no mods, 72Van is a pile of rust, , Racer is being built but has the works and the 2000 rover cooper needs an engine again :(
It can be one of many things:
1: lean burn causing to high a combustion temperature (very bad news needs to be sorted ASAP)
2: Over advanced Ignition also bad news needs sorting ASAP
3: Crab butterfly not closing totally no major big but a good idea to sort before causing a bigger problem
3: to rich a mixture causing deposits on the head which glow red hot when the Ignition is switch off igniting the incoming fuel and air mixture
4: vacuum leak check all pipes.
So how do you go about finding where the problem is?
First take out a plug if it is sooty and black most like hood is your mixture is rong (bring the car to a rolling road have it setup right)
If the plug is white or has no colour then it is most like running lean same as before rolling road
one very simple test to try to see if its ignition advance that is your problem is just as you turn the ignition of press the throttle if the engine does not run any more than normal then its ignition if it runs on less then it like to be a vacuum leak or a sticky throttle butterfly.
Have you had any tuning done on the engine? What dizzy are you using?
Like Merlin says it sounds like mixture or timing or both.It could distroy your new engine if not sorted soon.
Sounds like Run-On, no doubt caused by one or more of the reasons highlighted by Merlin, it needs sorting sooner than later as it can cause major damage, learn to stop the car in gear as good habit but get the engine looked at soon.
A fully carbon fiber Mini Marcos shell weighs just 7.25kg.
Thanks for the help. I have not done any tunning to the engine and the dizzy is made by aldon. Does anyone no of a mini friendly rolling road in cork that i could take it to.
