The standard distributor for that engine is a lucas 59D which has a clip on cap. Some Minis run a ducillier distributor which also has a clip on cap. Sounds like you have some other distributor on which the wiring may be more complex. What colour wires have you comming from the distributor?

What was the first good use for a moke, if youve ever been in a moke in the rain you certainly wouldn't camp in it.

Exhaust shouldn't make much difference. Are you running electric or belt drive fan?.
Using coolant only instead of water/anti-freeze is meant to disperse heat better.
How is engine performing? Wrong ignition timing can heat up engine, check vacuum advance is working OK.

Sounds like you've reached that crossroads that most mini enthusiasts eventually do. Usual solution is buy another and have the best of both worlds (or two cars lying around with nither ever finished).

Wouldn't recomend replacing the fusebox with inline fuses . As well as being a fusebox it acts as a junction between some heavy cables ,mainly brown or white so make sure your connections are strong enough for heavy current.

If the car starts first time on a jump it sounds like bad batttery connections or something discharging...

There are some 10" alloys that will fit but very few. I remember seeing a set on a Swedish limo-mini but can't remember which type they were.
