Had one of these many years ago. Are you trying to remove just the chrome or the whole strip. To remove the chrome leaver one end away from the body and push sidways along the strip. This reviles rivets that hold the "wood " strip on. May see u sunday

When you say the car stops going i assumn you mean the engine is still running but there is no power in it. Kits can be fitted with a rubber seal between kit and body, not as nice looking but easier to maintain in the long run especialy if you have a different paint job. Seals are available from minispares.

Ribs on A+ make it quieter and it has different drop gears with a stronger and larger idler bearings.

I had this problem before, turned out to be water pump. The car ran fine and didn't overheat but the impeller in the pump was so worn it couldn't produce enough pressure to supply the heater, like you said it just got warm until you put the fan on and it actually cooled the water.
