Imho if the spare dizzy is in good shape and is correct for the engine, use it.

High Performance ignition only really starts being useful for modded or competition engines.

Yes, that one would be grand. Having had both minis with std & electronic points I recommend the electronic ones. So the "MS" version then.

AFAIK only the copper 'S' and MG 1300GT had double valve springs. Whats wrong with the distributor? Might be possible to get it re-built. the weights, springs & vacuum control the advance curve, specific to each type of engine. eg. the distro for a Metro 1.3 HLE would be quite different from the...

this time of year the big loads on the battery, after cranking, are lights, heater & wipers. HiFi/radio etc only drains a fraction of what your lights do. check that the alternator/water pump belt is not too worn and correctly tight - if its loose it the alternator wont provide full charge. then...

good to hear you have it sorted you can use a K&N filter insert which keeps the standard filter housing & air mix options - just replaces the paper element. But dont expect much improvement over a new OEM paper filter though. I'd say your issue was a sticky/dirty carb piston - little enough ...
