The Mpi minis came in from late '96.
So all minis registered from then on should have drivers airbag, seat belt pre-tensioners and anti-intrusion bars in the doors.

Yes it could be genuine, John Cooper Garages did a carb & then an injection 1400cc conversion. The carb version consisted of a rebore to 1400cc, forged racing pistons, stage 3 cylinder head, new specially designed camshaft, twin 1 1/2" SU carburettors, large bore exhaust manifold and system...

Its not the Mk1 shell the GRX5D registration first appeared on, however the mk2 shell and the registration were put together around 1968 by the BMC works team.
They wanted the rally Minis to be the current mk2 model.
from memory the mk1 shell ended up BOO911F, or something simlar.
